About Course

The objective of this qualification is to support a role in the workplace, such as lead adult care workers, lead personal assistants, care supervisors or community support workers to name a few. This qualification forms the competence requirements for those learners working in adult care settings at level 3.

Learners will have responsibility for providing person-centred, values-driven care and support for those accessing a service. The learner will work under the direction of a manager or supervisor but will have a degree of autonomy. As well as demonstrating best practice, they will be working towards promoting and modelling it. Learners may or may not have supervisory responsibilities for others.

Learners will most likely be working in the following settings:

  • residential or nursing homes
  • domiciliary care
  • day centres
  • healthcare

The content of the qualification covers core content that applies to the adult social care sector with a variety of optional units covering additional knowledge and skills applicable to learners in level 3 roles. Learners may also wish to select units in leadership and digital skills as part of this qualification.

Course Content

This unit is aimed at those who work in a wide range of settings. The unit is about the central importance of communication in such settings, and ways to overcome barriers to meet individual needs and preferences using communication.

Unit 2: Effective Handling of Information in Care Settings
This unit is aimed at those working in a wide range of settings. It covers the knowledge and skills needed to implement and promote good practice in recording, sharing, storing and accessing information.

Unit 3: Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in Care Settings
This unit covers promoting continuing professional development (CPD) in care settings. This includes being able to reflect on own practice and use learning opportunities in relation to developing own practice, skills and progression within a professional role.

Unit 4: Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in Care Settings

Unit 4: Promoting Personal Wellbeing
This unit covers the promotion of own personal wellbeing, taking into account both physical health and mental wellbeing, including ways to develop resilience to support own wellbeing and build strategies for progress.

Unit 6: Promoting Choice and Independence in Care Settings
This unit is aimed at those working in a wide range of settings. It provides the learner with the knowledge and skills required to promote a culture that empowers individuals to have choice, autonomy and independence over their lives.

Unit 7: Promoting Individuals’ Health and Wellbeing in Care Settings
This unit is aimed at those working in a wide range of settings. It provides the learner with the knowledge and skills required to promote individuals’ health and wellbeing to ensure positive outcomes.

Unit 8: Promoting Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Human Rights in Care Settings

This unit is aimed at those working in a wide range of settings. It provides the learner with the knowledge and skills required to promote and implement principles and practices relating to specific health and safety topics in their work setting.

Unit 11: Promoting Infection Prevention and Control in Care Settings
This unit is aimed at those working in a wide range of settings. It provides the learner with the knowledge and skills required to promote and implement principles and practices relating to infection prevention and control. Learners must always be following current infection prevention and control guidelines as issued by the relevant government department and informed by the best available evidence and guidance.

Unit 12: Care Worker Responsibilities and Ways of Working
This unit is aimed at those working in a wide range of settings. It provides the learner with the knowledge and skills required to understand the nature of working relationships, how to work in ways that are agreed with the employer and how to work in partnership with others.

Unit 13: The Principles of Duty of Care in Care Settings
This unit is aimed at those who work in a wide range of settings. It introduces ways to address the dilemmas, conflicts or complaints that may arise where there is a duty of care.

Unit 14: The Principles of Safeguarding and Protection in Care Settings
This unit is aimed at those working in a wide range of care settings. This unit covers the important area of safeguarding individuals from abuse and neglect. It identifies different types of abuse and neglect and the signs and symptoms that might indicate abuse is occurring. It considers when individuals might be particularly vulnerable to abuse and neglect and what a learner must do if abuse and neglect are suspected or alleged.

Unit 15: The Principles of Mental Capacity and Restrictive Practice in Care Settings
This unit is aimed at those working in a wide range of care settings. This unit covers the principles of mental capacity and restrictive practice.
